Joia Gems - The Who, What, When and Why!

Welcome to our blog about fabulous, fine jewelry and gemstones and the people that create them.

Hosted by Patricia Syvrud and Christine Webb of Joia Consulting, www.joiaconsulting.com, we aim to teach, inspire and delight you so that one day, you too will appreciate jewelry the same that way we do! Both of us received our graduate gemologist diplomas from the world-renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Our backgrounds include decades of experience working within the jewelry industry at such illustrious organizations as the Smithsonian Institution, the Gemological Institute of America, Tiffany & Company and QVC, to name just a few. Patricia holds an MBA from the University of Southern California, and has been honored to be former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's pro bono jewelry consultant since 2006. She founded the jewelry expertise services company Joia Consulting, LLC in 2011. Christine's undergraduate degree is in geology and her fascinating background includes sourcing rough diamonds in Russia, managing one of the most successful Tiffany & Co. retail locations (after their NY flagship store), and consulting to the Smithsonian Institution's National Gem Collection (NGC) since 1997.

Patricia lived in Brazil for many years where her passion for gemstones truly came alive.  After studying jewelry design, goldsmithing, and geology in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she too, had the good fortune to consult to the curator of the National Gem Collection in Washington D.C. cataloguing the collection, then later was recruited to work at the Gemological Institute of America and Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company.

Today, Christine continues to consult for the National Gem Collection, assisting the curators with the collection, representing the Smithsonian at trade shows and working on special projects.  She can be seen on national TV sharing the history, lore and background of the Smithsonian Institution pieces that are featured in QVC's NGC-inspired jewelry.

Patricia runs Joia Consulting (the word 'joia' means 'jewel' in Portuguese) and works with a variety of clients including designers and manufacturers, law firms, non-profit organizations, trade associations and private individuals.  Both Christine and Patricia continue to assist Secretary Albright with her pin exhibit and book, "Read My Pins, Stories From a Diplomat's Jewel Box".

We love all things jewelry, and especially enjoy going to trade shows and other jewelry industry events.  We have longstanding relationships with trusted colored gemstone and diamond dealers, and fabulous jewelry designers that we're featuring in this blog.  So many of them sell their jewels only through exclusive, luxury boutiques around the globe, so let us know if you're interested in purchasing anything you see in our posts, and we'll help you build a unique jewelry wardrobe that reflects your individuality and esthetic. Much of the jewelry is surprisingly affordable!

We're truly excited at the opportunity to share our interest and passion through this blog.  We're taking turns writing the posts, so you can see which one of us authored the post at the top of each page.  We're also each picking a 'Gem to Remember' in each post - one of our favorites and why we love them. We're not planning on spamming you with posts, so please subscribe to this blog below, as we'll only be posting every week or so.

We welcome your feedback and requests for certain designers and/or gemstones.  Please email us at info@joiaconsulting.com. We also hope to use video frequently, so please let us know if you're a jewelry designer who already has video to share.  Enjoy!  Or as I like to say, "Joia To The World"!
