Post by Patricia Syvrud

The new year makes me think of new beginnings.  And what epitomizes a new beginning better than an engagement and subsequent wedding?? We're starting this year with a re-post about the award-winning Armenian jewelry designer Alishan, who's bridal jewelry is lovely, feminine and oh-so-different!

One of Alishan's bridal collections in white, yellow and rose gold.

So many of the designers whose jewelry we admire are truly lovely people, and the husband and wife team of  award-winning jewelry designer Alishan Halebian and Lydia Tutunjian that make up the company Alishan are a perfect example.  I recently spent a wonderful afternoon with Alishan and Lydia at their atelier on the West Coast.

Deeply inspired by his Armenian heritage, Alishan's pieces evoke the mystery and beauty of a land that straddles Europe and Asia and surrounds the Biblical mountains of Ararat.  His mix of different color metals in a single piece of jewelry and use of subtle color in his gem-set pieces result in jewelry that is strong, yet feminine; casual and elegant, looking equally at home during the day at work as they do at an elegant evening gathering.

Pieces from Alishan's 'Fashion' collection:  Patina silver and 18K rose  and yellow gold with a natural  pink rose cut diamond and colorless diamond accents cuff, with complimenting necklace and earrings in silver, 18K yellow gold and natural colored diamonds:

Some examples of the 'feminine yet strong' esthetic that I mentioned earlier.  How great would these silver with patina and 18K yellow  gold rings look at work with a sleek silk suit?  Christine's favorite piece in the collection is the ring featuring the cushion cut garnet with diamond accents - it is extremely comfortable to wear.  She has tried it on in Tucson several times and hopes to add it to her jewelry collection in the near future! A statement ring - unique and special in design.

One of my favorites is this rose gold and patina silver ring set with natural colored diamonds. It's bold but Oh So Wearable:

Alishan's Bridal line is unique and feminine. Definitely for the bride with a strong sense of self:

Alishan's jewelry truly is set apart from the other items in your jewelry box, like this hand-carved ebony wood 'Spiral' pendant accented with18K yellow gold and silver:

Look how beautiful this wonderful Tahitian cultured pearl looks being hugged by tiny white and black diamonds:

I so want this patina silver, cultured black pearl and natural colored diamond cuff:

A suite of three moonstone, silver and 18K yellow gold rings, accented with diamonds and garnets:

Alishan is one of the few designers to work with palladium, a rich-looking white metal in the platinum family.  His pendant below is accented with a Tahitian cultured pearl and diamonds:
Some 'works in progress' from my visit:

Watch and learn about Alishan and his journey to become the jewelry designer he is today:

Alishan is featured in Beth Bernstein's new coffee table book, "Jewelry's Shining Stars" that highlights some of today's most innovative and intriguing jewelry designers.  Additionally, five of Alishan's artistic pieces of jewelry are being show in the Forbes Galleries in New York City until February 22, 2014, where they are part of the "Variations on a Theme: 25 Years of Design from the AJDC" exhibition.
