Pinar Oner Design Atelier

Post by Patricia Syvrud

Say the words 'Istanbul, Turkey' and one is immediately transported to an exotic land that many of us only dream about - the beautiful mosques turned cathedrals turned museums; the ever present Turkish tea and sweet Turkish delight in its myriad of flavors; the deep, rich colors of handmade Kilim carpets, brass and glassware in the bazaars; and the sights and sounds of slender minarets reaching for the sky that reverberate with the haunting 'call to prayer' throughout the day and night.  Luckily for those of us who love jewelry, the young, talented Turkish jewelry designer Pinar Oner is spreading her wings and culture to the markets far from home.

Pinar Oner is founder of Pinar Oner Design Atelier in Istanbul, Turkey.  Born and raised in Ankara, Pinar always held a fascination for fine jewelry craftsmanship and design, even as a young girl.  After studying graphic arts at university, she took a course at the Parsons New School for Design in New York, where her eyes were opened to the concept of incorporating the world around her into her designs. I recently had the great fortune of visiting Pinar in her atelier in Istanbul and also got a 'sneak peek' at her new retail presence in the lovely, fashionable neighborhood of Nisantasi.
A selection of Pinar Oner's rings.  What a treasure trove of beauty and elegance!

With names like 'Byzantine Art', 'Ottoman', 'Ionian' and 'Hittite', Pinar takes the cultural influences of the world in which she lives and through design, precision and fine craftsmanship, creates expressions of culture into wearable jewelry with global appeal.

I think my favorite collection of Pinar's is the Ottoman Collection.  The colors, patterns and design elements all bring to mind Istanbul and the innate beauty of Turkish culture.

Below is Christine's favorite ring in the collection.  She is swooning over so many of these enameled rings with fabulous colored gemstones, but this ring has it all - color, design and uniqueness. The white enamel work with pink floral motif, and black enamel border framing the diamonds, beautifully highlight the pink tourmaline.  The reverse-set gem really makes the ring interesting and reminiscent of the mosque domes, incorporating the exotic colors, shapes and forms seen in Istanbul.  Truly a special ring, a one-of-a-kind treasure indeed. Now on the "wish list"!

Emulating other great Turkish designers like Gurhan and Sevan Bicakci, Pinar launched her collection last year at the Couture show in Las Vegas, garnering a much coveted Couture Design Award for her bridal design, below:

In addition to launching her line in the US, the new Pinar Oner Design Atelier recently opened in Istanbul's elegant Nisantasi fashion district.  The back-lit slices of Brazilian agate which line the walls of her new shop are the perfect backdrop for her jewels: contemporary, but with a beauty that spans the ages.
