Oscar Night Jewelry 2014

post by Christine Webb

Just thought I'd blog this morning about the incredible jewelry worn at the 2014 Academy Awards.  This year I was happy to see statement necklaces that were sorely missed last year. However, I was disappointed at the lack of colored gemstones, again!  And I wished there were more colorful gowns - so many neutrals.  However the metallic fabrics of gold and silver along with the  embellishments were to die for! Below are a few of the ladies that I felt had on gorgeous opulent gems - and a few that I thought could have made a better choice - and of course I've given my opinion!

And the award for the BEST OF EVERYTHING goes to Cate Blanchett!  She was flawless - drop dead gorgeous! The Armani gown was exquisite - but the Chopard Opal and Diamond Pendant Earrings were beyond spectacular.  She also had on a beautiful brown diamond bracelet. Cate had my vote from the beginning of the red carpet coverage - and I didn't change my mind for the rest of the evening.  Magnificent!

Charlize was a close second in my book.  She is just one of the most beautiful women walking on this planet, seriously WOW!  The Harry Winston Diamond Necklace was incredible - a mere $15 million - and perfect for her breathtaking black Dior.  Did I mention D-Flawless 31ct diamond! Sophisticated, extraordinary, stunning. And when she stood next to Chris Hemsworth - say no more - best presenters ever!

Naomi Watts again wore a gorgeous statement necklace over a high neckline - and it worked. The spiderweb diamond necklace and Serpenti diamond bracelet both by Bulgari were outstanding.  She looked spectacular!  My amazing blog partner, Patricia Syvrud, noticed this necklace immediately.  She felt it added an interesting architectural accent to Naomi's very "soft" beaded dress.

Amy Adams was so elegant.  Her Tiffany & Co. Earrings of rhodochrosite, lapis and turquoise were the pop of color she needed.  And she also had on a $1.4million yellow diamond bracelet! Nice!

I wasn't crazy about Idina Menzel's dress even though I love Vera Wang - but who cares when you're wearing such an outstanding diamond necklace by Chimento.  It was undeniably the statement diamond necklace of the evening - it just drapes around her neck like fabric. And the bracelet too - astonishing! Now this is Oscar jewelry!

I love this sexy, sophisticated, feels like the early 1900s look!  And Karen O set off this exquisite dress with an incredible diamond brooch by Neil Lane .  PERFECTION!  No need to say more. I'd love to see a close-up to tell if it's Edwardian or Deco!

Anne Hathaway had so much bling in the dress - she had to keep the jewelry simple.  Love the Neil Lane 100ct emerald cut diamond ring (sorry no pic!), the diamond bracelets and tasteful diamond earrings.

Jessica Biel had on refined Tiffany & Co. diamond and aquamarine earrings with a diamond necklace.  And the diamond bracelets were fabulous too!

Kerry Washington looked lovely - so difficult to do when you're expecting.  Loved the bracelets! Normally I would like to see a larger earring - but it was in keeping with the simplicity of the dress and the diamond bar pin worn vertically.  Her Jennifer Meyer Jewelry was Classy!

Olivia Wilde, another expectant mother, was elegantly dressed in Valentino.  But her Lorraine Schwartz jewelry was beyond compare. The bracelets, ring, and those outstanding earrings - white jade in platinum - left me speechless. Refined, sophisticated, fabulous!

Jennifer Lawrence is just so adorable in every way!  Loved the red Dior gown - thanks for the color.  And the back draped diamond necklace by Neil Lane was perfect. Diamonds and rock crystal quartz - impeccable design. Simply Stunning!

Angelina Jolie looked beautiful in Elie Saab, one of my favorite designers. Not crazy about the cinched waist - but the fabric of the dress was amazing.  But more importantly - she had on breathtaking HUGE double-drop diamond earrings by Robert Procop that were Oscar worthy - and perfect for the dress.  Did I mention 42 carats!!!

Lupita was just adorable and amazing.  Love this powder blue Prada gown - just stunning - now to be called Nairobi blue!  Everyone was crazy for her Fred Leighton jewelry - a gold and diamond headband and a pair of interesting crescent-shaped diamond spiked gold earrings, a gold snake bracelet,  and several rings, one being a gold frog ring which she said was her family's totem.  I loved the headband - and she did look fresh and young.  But, sorry to say - I felt it wasn't pulled together.  Her neckline was screaming for a necklace.  When you are that thin - those bones need a little camouflage. See my recommendation below!

This is the necklace that I think would have made Lupita's ensemble special and added to that Prada gown! A magnificent extraordinary and exquisite tsavorite garnet pendant necklace by Arunashi. Now this is one-of-a-kind COLOR! And tsavorite garnets are a single-source gem coming from an area near the Tsavo National Park (hence the name tsavorite!) on the border of Kenya and Tanzania.  Now how about a rare gemstone like tsavorite to remind you of home! Kenyan Green?!
And I'd add the necklace this Arunashi tsavorite and diamond ring.  As for earrings and bracelets - just a simple stack of diamond bangles and big diamond stud earrings!

Sandra Bullock looked beautiful as always - but I so wanted to see her in gorgeous sapphire and diamond jewelry - and I know the perfect pieces by Michelle Ong for Carnet - see below! She would have made the top of my list had she accessorized with a little more Bling! She had on diamond cluster earrings from Lorraine Schwartz that were lovely - but she needed bigger earrings or a statement necklace as far as I'm concerned.

My recommendation -  this suite of sapphire and diamond jewelry by Michelle Ong for Carnet that I think would have made Sandra Bullock's look go from beautiful to magnificent and through the roof!

But if Sandra wanted a drop dead gorgeous necklace - I'd suggest one of these phenomenal diamond creations from Michelle Ong with a very simple diamond stud earring!  Now this is Hollywood jewelry - Elizabeth Taylor style!

Penelope Cruise was dressed in a feminine flowing pink gown that called for pink diamonds or perhaps kunzite, morganite, tourmaline, or pink spinel - with a more interesting design.  The jewelry she had on just seemed so predictable - and of course it wasn't - it was beautiful Chopard diamond drop earrings!  But sorry Penelope - the jewelry just wasn't what it should have been.

I think these incredible jewels from Tiffany & Co. would have been perfect with her dress - the morganite and diamond bracelet is a masterpiece!  And the morganite necklace is so feminine with its ribbon of diamonds. Then add this fit for a queen ring - kunzite and diamonds - what a mounting!

Without a necklace - I think I'd just wear a spectacular diamond pendant earring by Erica Courtney - again so delicate and ladylike - with astonishing micro-pave! And they'd work with the TCo bracelet and ring!

Well - that's a wrap!  I loved watching the Academy Awards - mostly for the jewelry - but also for the couture gowns.  And I do love the movies!  But to be a jewelry stylist - now that's a dream for every gemologist!  Until next awards season........
